Take Action!

Sent August 5th 2024

Dear Landowner, Neighbor, and Friend,

You by now are well aware of the proposals to build High Voltage Transmission Lines through North Baltimore County and on through Carroll and Frederick Counties to feed a substation near the Potomac River. While the developers of the data center in Frederick contend they have secured their own power source, there is little doubt that the power vacuum in the region is driven by the proliferation of data centers in Northern Virginia.

What can we do? While the elected officials in Carroll County have been unanimous in their objections to the proposals, save a few brave souls, Baltimore County and State officials have been slow to act. We thank Delegate Nino Mangione, Councilman Wade Kach, Senator Chris West and former Governor Larry Hogan for their opposition. County Executive, Johnny O weighed in last week with a letter of inquiry to PSEG. We need a united front of opposition to make a difference.

NOW is the time to unleash a SECOND wave of letters and emails to spur our elected officials to take action on behalf of the residents in North Baltimore County and the greater region. Suggested letters are below.

The open lands serve as the filter and lungs for the city’s drinking water and as a welcome respite for residents who cycle, pick your own at local farms, fish, and hike. Century farms, historic places, wildlife corridors, endangered species, essential watersheds and forest cover – we have them all.

Your U.S. Senators and Congressmen are on recess – but please be sure they have a stack of emails and letters waiting upon their return.

In the meantime, we reiterate Ann Jones’ advice that you are under no obligation to speak with the realtors we expect PSEG may eventually be sending your way and know that we are preparing to do all in our power to protect the open and conserved spaces we all share.

As for your easements, we will be studying them one by one and we encourage you to pull out your paperwork and become familiar with its terms. Thank you for those of you who called about habitats for endangered species and historic artifacts and structures. We have an impressive list started and are seeking authentications. We must all become “citizen scientists” in this combined effort to make a difference.

Thank you so very much,

Victoria C. Collins                          Ann H. Jones
